The semantic gap or the pragmatic gap?
In the last few years I have developed a fondness for the language based philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein. During the last few guest lectures, it was nice to see some of some similar ideas being incorporated in contemporary thought.Wittgenstein was important for more than a few reasons. The reason we can see most in these lectures though, is his method of applying logic to language. In prof. Groenendijk‘s lecture, he concluded that between semantics, syntax and pragmatics the semantic gap lies between somewhere between semantics and pragmatics. Dr. Simaan held a more radical approach to pragmatics, using a similar approach to Wittgenstein, stating that semantics for a big part is pragmatic. In language, meaning is embedded in its use. The semantic gap can be found then, in the ambiguity that is inherent to our use of language. This view is oscillated in communication sciences as noise. This noise, or ambiguity prevents or impedes the communication process
It is very interesting to see just have far this ambiguity goes. The last lecture told us much about how our brains work; that we can actually try to fill in the blanks by going through our possibilities, and from context/experience we try to distill a meaningful sentence. However, the semantic (or pragmatic) gap is where the message is lost. Wittgensteins philosophy is actually centered around the ambiguities that arise when using language. In doing this, he actually presents some interesting ideas about interpretation. A famous example, or visual illusion is his duck-rabbit:
Another interesting thought experiment is the following sequence: RRBGGGRWW. The question is, how would an axiom be attainted from this sequence? How many elements do you think this sequence has? There are many possible criteria’s in order to distill an axiom from it, but none of it is capable of representing the structure fully. In his Philosophical Investigations, Wittgenstein uses this idea to reject his Logical Anatomism founded in the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. Here is a graphic model of the sequence:
