Tutorial

Can you predict whether a person was watching a cartoon or a serious documentary only by looking at his or her brain activity? In this tutorial we will use this research question to familiarize you with our software and hardware. More generally, this tutorial is a first guide to performing a research project in the Beta lab. Typically such a project consists of the following parts:

  • Forming of research question
  • Literature study
  • Design of experiment
  • Performing the experiment and collecting data
  • Analyzing data and forming conclusions

This tutorial introduces you to the practical work of the Data Collection and Data Analysis parts. The other parts will be covered during the lectures and the lab sessions. After this tutorial you will be able to:

  • Use the Emotiv Epoc Headset (preparation, connecting, cleaning, storing)
  • Use the Emotiv software to obtain raw EEG data
  • Set up an experiment using the Experiment Wizard
  • Obtain EEG data for different stimuli and subjects
  • Analyze EEG data using Weka and Excel

If at any point you are stuck or unsure how to continue, or if you require an example, have a question or a comment, do not hesitate to approach one of the lab assistants;
