Anna says “Niiice”
George says “Can I come by for a cup ;)”
Jenny and 4 others like it.
Usual reactions to a status entry on Facebook. You say what you are doing, what you are thinking etc. and other people tell you what they think about it. It can be a short thought, like Anna´s or it can even be a shorter thought like Jenny´s and the other´s. They just decided to press the “like” button. It is enough. It expresses what they think. No need for words.
Now, George is a different case. He obviously likes it, as well. That is why he wants to join for a cup of coffee. This would mean that George and me are friends. He could, of course, call me but we already found out, that Facebook is somewhat more attractive than a phone. So what George does, is assuming that I will check my status entry and the comments about it and that I will answer him. I am certainly busy with writing my blog, so I might not have time for George. Now, will I tell him that or will I just not tell anything? Why did I tell everyone in the first place what I am doing? And why the hell did George put a smiley behind his comment? Is that supposed to be kinky or does that mean that he is not serious and does not want to come by but just said it for the sake of saying something?
“Everything we do online aims at being paid in the greatest currency of our time: attention.” Everybody wants and needs attention. And in our times of online communication this might be the way to get it. It seems like a normal part of our life to share our thoughts or actions with a large community and to expect some kind of approval, whether it is a statement like “nice” or one like “jenny and 4 others like it”.
It might not even occur to us, that it is attention we are seeking for when we write a status entry. However, with some people it is obvious. Writing a status entry like “uuuaaaaah aaaaahhhhhhrg!!!!!” implies wanting others to ask “what´s wrong?”. And others do. So they get an explanation. The remaining question here is: why not tell straight away what is wrong? The answer is the same: attention. You do not just want to tell people what bothers you. You want them to care what does. And if you are sitting in front of a screen and people cannot see that you are sad/angry/upset than the only possibility of showing them is an entry like “uaaaaaah!”.
Status entries are short, quick and understandable. However, sometimes not for all your Facebook friends. When a large amount of people is writing a paper, which is supposed to be 2500 words long, then an entry like “600/2500” expresses enough. It is a communication between a certain group of people, namely those in the same writing situation. People who don´t understand it, still have the option of pressing the like button, if they really feel like contributing to the conversation.
Whatever it is we expect from our status entries, it became a part of our lives and it is our way of getting attention, may it be consciously or unconsciously.
So, what are you doing now?

Wearing dress shoes not only look good, but should be beneficial to our health, mbt healthier is that they both preferred. High heels are fashion beauty favorites, but we all know the pain of long-term wear high heels, and now the show floor that "grotesque" and a lot of alternative models high heels bow down even more T units. That is definitely worth a thought, otherwise people might think you are dead or something. Usually when someone does not show online presence for a long time its a scandal, I mean people even update their profiles and statuses during holidays, while I think that if you´re lying somewhere on the beach it is time for a facebook-holiday.
Haha, this article is straight out of life.
what most people do not understand is that facebook is a public space, not private. The only thing that is private in facebook is messages. Updating your every mood or very single thing that you do is ridiculous unless all of the friends on facebook are as ridiculous as the updater himself/herself. Why would you even want to let everybody know about your current problems or activities? These people are so desperate for attention they loose respect their own privacy, which means they loose respect for themsleves. plus they don't respect other people by putting so much shit of their own into private space.
get used to use the "real" apostrophe ( ' , shift+# on german keyboards, don't know which layout your keyboards in amsterdam have :D ) instead of the accent aigu ( ´ )
now, i will write this comment in english, and i hope it will be great :D I was reading your blog entry, and in the same time i wrote a status in svz *funny* i think it's correct, what you wrote. All people want attention, consciously or unconsciously. I couldn't find another reason for writing an status in facebook oder something like that. Because YOU know what you are doing, or thinking, or feeling. And so, you don't have to write a status for knowing what you are doing! You want, that the OTHERS know, what you are doing.
I think i understood :D (jetzt hab ich dir echt nur alles nachgeplappert, was du im blog geschrieben hast :P)
Great entry ;)
Hey, thanks for the entry. You made a good point, we all apparently want others to know what we are doing. And not only that: we want to know what they think about it, whether they approve or not or whether they probably do the same.
I actually really like it when people have Facebook statuses with short little updates on what they're doing - not the useless "Good morning! Just had breakfast." stuff, but just nice little anecdotes from their life. Lyrics, facts, questions, interesting activities... It's a nice way of indirectly keeping in touch with each other and updating our friends.
Ps. I just noticed that I have to answer a math equation below, one that is " for testing whether you are a human visitor and to prevent automated spam submissions". This is mean. You just reminded me that it takes a while before I know the answer to 11+5.
Dear Leonore,
I agree with you in that nice little anecdotes are interesting and fun. The thing is, that this does not happen too often, or let's say the useless "good morning, just had breakfast!" stuff happens too often.
your topic choice is a great one!
i was trying to think of some meaningful, worthwhile status that ive ever seen or posted, and i didnt come up with anything.. so why do i still do it? and why very time i have to study, i first spend half an hour going through my friends' statuses?.. hm..

a;skdlur. I like the comments that are not noises, but rather random keys strokes. I feel as though they relieve frustration that the skyper is having, though they are still itching to see if they have a little red message box next to their globe. Sometimes it is for attention, but that attention is probably a good form of distraction. Personally I'm in different to whether or not someone does it. Doesn't bother me.
i was actually thinking about this not too long ago. people often write things like "im going to jump of the window" asking for attention, but then with facebook we no longer know if they are actually going to jump, or they just want to see if someone replies. anyway, all these "uuuuaaaaarrrhhh" statuses are the most annoying ones and i never reply to them.
Interesting Article ! and funny as well :)
